'The Social Reckoning' fell short of projections and the box office legacy of 2010’s The Social Network
Sony Pictures and director Aaron Sorkin’s The Social Reckoning opened to a disappointing $5.5 million USD at the North American box office, crumbling into fifth place during its opening weekend. The R-rated Facebook drama fell short of its $7 million to $8 million USD projections.
Written and directed by Sorkin, The Social Reckoning serves as a companion piece to 2010’s The Social Network. Starring Mikey Madison as a Facebook engineer leaking internal documents to a reporter played by Jeremy Allen White, the $30 million USD production struggled to incentivize theatergoers, earning a mixed 54% Rotten Tomatoes score and a “B-” CinemaScore. In comparison, the original 2010 David Fincher film opened to $22 million USD before grossing $224 million USD globally.
Meanwhile, Universal and Blumhouse’s horror feature Other Mommy, starring Jessica Chastain, claimed the weekend’s top spot with a $27.5 million USD domestic debut and $45.19 million USD worldwide total against an $18 million USD budget. Other box office holdovers included Tom Cruise’s $160 million USD satire Digger, which plummeted 60% in its second weekend to $3.2 million USD, alongside Amazon MGM’s Verity and Sony’s Resident Evil reboot.
The Social Reckoning and Other Mommy are currently playing in theaters nationwide.
